- Added a low volume snare fill
I like the mix. You added a snare fill? How did you do that?
Thanks Dave.
Actually, It's not a real snare fill but sounds like that. May be I am not using the correct word. You can hear it at 0:32 and again towards the end. I used a combination of multiple effects (glitch, filter, etc.) found in Tantra plugin.
I heard that but wasn't sure if that was what you were talking about. :tu:
Dave, That is a pingpong delay and any triple delay can do that in a more creative way if you want to try.
Even if it is not my go to for this type of effect add H-delay from waves put it on ping pong mode and play with the time and feedback put the dry wet around 5 to 10 percent and voila.

Nice song, it reminded me of Nitrome game music done by Lee Nicklen.

My Mix:

I didn’t do too much as I liked how the sound and the separations were established in the multitracks already.

I mainly used small amounts of eqs, compressions and different saturations almost on every track. Also some delays and reverbs, but not much. I decided to go with drier sound. It felt to me that an intimate small abmience suited well the relaxed mood of the tracks.

As loudness adjustments / limiting were not allowed on the master bus, the loudness of my mix must be somewhere around -18-20 LUFS. So if you don’t hear it or it feels too weak, turn up the volume :)

not to worry about loudness from my part... I'll normalize to a value all the mixes and then make fine adjustments by ear to each so they all seem the same loudness

Dear other Geeks,

for me, mixing such an instrumental is about helping the composition. It lacks of depth sometimes - since it is redundant at some points and vst-made. Still its solid and fun to listen to!
I automatised very many things to help blending parts and make them more livlier. Foe example: I created silence between the claps and the next part - to let it jump into it. All in all i tried to refer to the time of analog synths (..stranger thing soundtrack), tried to catch the highs and let just single instruments represent them. I tried to arrange a red thread from the beginning until its end, tried to control the attention to the melodies that are upfront and decided which are not. The rhodes melody was the trickiest. For me it was played too high, so i pitched it and doubled it. Tried to create a amp-like sound.

All in all, the rooms were made not too washy (i hope), i automated them sometimes, the snare-plate is modulated and differes every time. I needed to make it all more "organic".
Claps are dry and loud, hopefully to wake up the listener sometimes. Sidechain compression is used on many tracks. Only bass&kick are buscompressed.

Used
Soundtoys little plate
Valhalla VintageVerb
H-Delay
Slate VMR 1176
EnvelopeShaper
..and other.

Mixed at -14dbFS , 1,4dB to peak , 12,7dB Range

Thank you all,
Jonas

You said "be creative" so I took a lot of chances with this one. I wanted to embrace the eighties vibe so I went full 4AD on it. Lots of delays, chorusing and verb. Also, before anybody says anything, I didn't do any editing of the drums or bass. That's all plugins and mix tricks.

Hey 3ee, fun little song! I tried to keep it interesting by automating EQ & FX on the drums, along with doing like most everybody else - relied on a lot of delays, reverb, and widening tools to get a kind of dreamy feel to this song ("almost melancholic and thought-provoking.."). For added emphasis on transition points, I doubled the snare & crash tracks & split the doubled tracks into single shots so the snare could be heavily distorted with Sheps 73 and resonately hi-passed (ReaEQ) to behave like a "snap" following the reverse cymbal, which was also heavily distorted using the Sheps Omni Channel.

Hope you like it!

Hi, i just found out I'm punished for drum triggering (see MC38 - also for my response) so I'm out of this one. Nevertheless, I put some good work into it and don't just wanna let it go to waste, so here we go:

I wanted the song to feel more alive and to vibrate with the groove without loosing the mechanical "MIDI" feel of the groove and even emphasize it. But the first thing that stood out to me was the ending. I really didn't like how it kind of just stops, so I immediately changed it. Later on I saw that re-arranging is forbidden (I'm not that good wih rules, it seems :phones: ), but the damage was done already. I kept working with the alternate ending version and just changed it back to obey the rules. Turns out I even broke the rules twice because I layered a kick... Shame on me :bang:

So here is the forbidden fruit:

Here's the version with the original ending:

Just MP3 since I'm out already. Thanks 3ee for the song, I hope you enjoy it!
The Reaper Midi Song 2 was mixed in Reaper, of course! I heard that everything else would melt your speakers :)

See you next time fully recognizing the rules :whiteflag: :tu:

Cheers
Mork
