Pretty straight forward mix process, searching for a lofi-ish, warm sound.
Drums where compressed on the bus with Acustica audio Tan, to gain fatness and punch. Room is pretty high in the mix and squashed with RoughRider2. Every microphone is equalized and some were sent to a room verb. Hard tape saturation on the whole drums.
Bass took a bit of compression.
Electric guitars where reamped with a Bassman on Amplitube with a big amounth of room (Eguitar) and a JCM800 on bx_rockrack (finale).
For the other tracks just eq, compression and delay/verb to make them sit better in the mix. Saturation knob and a little eq by Ozone on the stereo bus.

Hello!

Synchronized vocal tracks.
Used the impulse from the lexicon 480L for snare track.
On MusicBox I used automatization for bunaural pan.

On other tracks, everything is standard: equalization, compression, panning. A bit of reverb and delay on the main vocal.

Working with the material was a pleasure. Thanks to the author of the song.
Here is my mix.

Hello good people!
Here goes my proposal. I'll post documentation tomorrow. Sorry, I'm very tired.

Edit:

The most important decision was how to approach vocals. Couldn’t feel this as a duet: for me, from interpretation and/as she never sings on her own, there's no different perspective from female character. I feel it more like she is present in spirit, an echo of his thoughts, a memory. Therefore I've presented her in a more distant and diffuse ambient.
Decided to pan opposite the bell piano and music box. They're still in stereo but restricted to Left and right respectively. I like the way it brings movement from side to side and variation of width. They occupy less space on verses and expand to the centre and to the sides on chorus. I've found also that it would be important for this sounds to retain a percussive character as they are keeping the waltz feel against the guitar and drums that are falling more into the 6/8 feel.
Furthermore, to create more width for chorus, the acoustic guitar moves 100% to the right, opposing the electric 100% on the left. Acoustic guitar (on the right) as some delay (ValhallaFreqEcho) on the left. Electric guitar (on the left) as some garden hose delay panned to the right.
On drums I wanted to give it more boom bloom and resonance. I've reamped them on my tiny room, capturing it from two ribbon mics that are over my drum kit and a Beta 52 that is on the kick. On the ribbons I've used compression to extract more of the resonance of my drum kit and eq for boom and fizz.
I've used two stereo tracks for parallel processing: one for drums and bass compressed with medium attack and quick release (two LR CLA76 blacky) and, low shelf boost at 100Hz and high shelf boost at 10KHZ (PuigTec); the other with just compression, medium attack, fast release, for everything else (two LR CLA76 blacky).
On the MasterBus I use from the get go, a PuigTec with Low and High shelf (100Hz, 10KHZ) and the PuigChild 670 doing nothing, compression wise. To the end of the mix I added an API2500 (Waves) with the slowest attack and fastest release, 1.5 ratio, barely doing anything (the needle don't even move).

Cheers,
Pedro Pitta Groz

I was going for a mellow mix with a big room sound and some high end sparkle from the acoustic guitars and music box. I wanted a long boom from the kick drum and combined it with a gated copy for definition.

Kick: Track copy 1: Low shelving boost, 4k boost, 1k cut, long reverb band passed about 100 Hz for big thud. Track copy 2: Gated with 250 ms release, high passed at 500 Hz, high shelving boost, 2k cut saturated, short reverb
Snare: Track used mainly to reinforce bottom and mids, so it was highly saturated with big low end boost and low passed at 3k with a boost about 1k, reverb
Hi hat: flanging effect to keep it from sounding too dry and help in blend with overheads
Overheads: scooped with big narrow cut at 1.3k (Don't remember why I did that), reverb
Tambourine: big long Motown reverb
Bass: narrow boost at 350 Hz, highly compressed then did a send to another channel where I high passed at 360 Hz, added tube distortion and flanging
Acoustic guitars: Multiband compression, 2 bands split at 1.6 k, big cut at 160 Hz. Sent to another channel super compressed, high and low passed for mid reinforcement. Big reverb panned opposite each guitar.
Accordian: A little EQ and lots more reverb.
Electric guitar 1: Used DI, compressed, saturated, Vonexgo Boogex for cabinet sim, low shelf, high shelf, bootst at 1.5k, flanger, ping pong panned reverb
Finale electric: used supplied amp track, saturated, 100 Hz boost, various EQ sloping down to about nothing by 5k, Azurite chorus effect and long reverb
Zebra Bell Piano: Azurite chorus, 2k boost trying to get definition, exciter to make some more high mids
Music Box: big cut around 3k to tame the clickety-clack, low pass at 10k to filter out those weird Zebra overtones, flanger and reverb to make it sound more natural
Phosphor HiPad: Exciter and Vonexgo Stereo touch effect AFTER a plate reverb (don't remember what I was thinking, but seems to work)
Female vocal: Crazy EQ all over attempting to tame standing wave from the phone booth she was standing in, lots of compression, delays and reverb to diffuse the vocals. I failed...
Lead vocal: Room sound successfully mitigated with notches at 320, 690, and 1170 Hz. Gentle wide boost around 500 Hz. Dynamic EX compressing at 280 Hz and 4.8k, big reverb

started by taming the kick/room. i wanted something more smooth and with less bottom end. with a big bass though. so a little chorus on the bass and taking the bottomend of the mix. went for a thinner vocalsound to allow for more natural lowmids in the instruments. tried overall to go for something natural and soothing. i hope you enjoy.

Here's mine..

Maybe I went too far from the original..
What's worth mentioning: This one is a really drum centered approach with a jazzy or swingy feel. Gated reverb on the hi hats which also sidechain the akkordeon. Stereo delay on ''AGuitar Solo''. A pinch of saturation on the overheads only. Delay on the kick for a sense of 6/8 waltz flow . I actually didn't add any reverb on the vocals except from the ''SusanVocMain''. Overally, keeping the vocals that dry in tandem with the drum focus made the whole thing tangible. At least as I perceive this.

It was so interesting to work on a Waltz, huge thanks!

Hi !

Ahhh ... the last day, everyone is jostling. I would never understand why but that is not important.
Hard day for "FESE" tomorrow morning and congratulations: 52 entries except error !
But the last minute is not the right one: "loupi" sending his mix under the name "Veroonbalsa": why ?
It's really messy and “Mister Fox” did a nice reminder of the contest rules.
Worse still, in the rush, "DimitrisPalantzas" sends the mix of "Margarita" ..............................
That's what it is, the last seconds.....
good luck to everyone !

Cheers

Franz
