Greetings,

This is my first post, thanks for the opportunity.

Mix was made using Cubase 10.5 as DAW and some of its native audio plugins; i also used some of the UAD plugings (is my audio unit) and some Ozone 9 plugings. I put focus on vocals and lead guitar but also i tried to make each instrument clear to the ear. Most of the time was spent equilizing. There is compression and some plate reverv on the lead vox. In a nutshell i tried to make a mix i liked, using my own parameters of how i would have done it for my own taste. Hope the differences in sould are positive to the ears.

My goal is to share not to compete (im an student in this field). I have invested some time but there is still a lot to learn.

Hard song to mix. I tried to keep it 80ish sounding. Did some lite tuning was not sure of some of the notes the singer was going for. The ending, I tried something different than a fade at the end.

Wav 48/24
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3mss5szhm0rwz ... e.wav?dl=0

Notes- I did some eqing and compression on just about everything sent all drums to a buss that had some eqing and compression. The Vocals I did a little tuning along with a mult track that had devil loc on it. also i did a lot of processing on the lead vocals .The backup vocals not a big fan of so I buried them. Keys got some tone shaping along with some saturation master track a little gluing and a limiter just for stay peaks.

Any questions or thoughts let me know!

Hi Everyone,

Was a pleasure working on this song. Here is what i did:

Vision:
Modern and transparent sounding mix with a touch of 1980s rock flair. Keep original timing to retain real band feeling.

Arrangement:
Kept as is

Drums:
Mainly worked on the snare to fit it better with the rest of the drums. Removed some annoying frequencies and added some saturation.

Bass:
Liked the sound as is, so just added some sub harmonic low-end processing and to make it more fat and some eq to shape it into the mix.

Instruments:
Used EQ's to remove annoying frequencies to to improve overall balance. Added compression and saturation where needed

Vocals:
Used EQ's and de-essing to remove annoying frequencies to to improve overall balance. Added slightly pitch correction where needed.

Buses:
Slightly Glue-Compression and stereo field adjustment added where needed. Tape saturation for glue and reverb instead of using fx-buses.

Master:
Automation for fade out

Stereo Out:
Added a little bit of saturation to glue things together as well as to get a more round overall sound. Theres also a bit of Eq to fit the top end to my taste.

Parameters:
Song Provider: John Kutkowski (project: Mystic Io)
Song Name and Length: The Reason, 3:30 min
Song Information: 128 BPM / Signature: 4/4
File Format: WAV, 48kHz, 24bit
LUFS: about -17.3 LUFS integrated (ITU-R BS.1770-4)
GENRE: (1980s/1990s) Rock

Hello everyone,

Thanks John for the song.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ubjeeo8djzhj0 ... g.wav?dl=0

I am not sure the result is clearly 80s, but here are
the things I've made:
the main vocal and back vocals compressed with Tubetech CL1B,
then all another Waves RVox. There is an additional "harmony line"
created to the back vocals.
The bass first got UAD Culture Vulture for some saturation.
Also, the transient designer used to emphasize the attack part a little bit,
then SSL style compression added.
Verse keys having the MicroShift for wider impression and is the Decapitator
saturated as well.
The kick has a tape style saturation and dbx160 style compression.
Snare was the most difficult one, finally got tape saturation, Waves RBass,
gated plate reverb, limiter and pretty much equalizing.
Overall, there is some minor eq on every track. A few tracks
(Guitar, OH, HH, Tambr) having dynamic eq (Soothe vst).
There are Slate Virtual Console (VCC mixbus), Eq, SSL type compressor
and Tape saturation added to the main bus.

Hello and welcome everybody!
Here is my entry:
WAV File: 48/24
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8jnakf0oj4sfj ... x.wav?dl=0

Full session 4k pic: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wemfnmnkejzon ... n.png?dl=0

Lest's start from drums:
PIC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/y7rd28lgzxuz4 ... B.png?dl=0
KIK -As you see little EQ and attack needed
SNARE - 1176, Kramer SNR EQ, Trigger, and EQ, I did not like the original one, I needed more of the tail.
The rest of the drums little rebalance and tonality with mainly EQ, no compression at all.
Only Room2 EQ

ROOM, BASS, PIANO, and GTR:
PIC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qeuospthim3vd ... R.png?dl=0
Only Room2 EQ
Bass - LA2, Tracker - sidechain with KIK to give more clarity, EQ and some Character
Piano - Zenner + some EQ
Finally GTR Pad Some FX mainly to spread and move away from VOX Freq. EQ plus MID/Side EQ

STRINGS, KEYS, SOLO GTR L/R
PIC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lz38anogpfgit ... 2.png?dl=0
I have decided to go with HAAS FX on both Strings and keys, giving corrective EQ to the latter.
GTR L/R smashed with Manley VMU/Pulsar, 2 Diff Amp and SSL flavor.

V O X
PIC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f0j2a0wb3xcgb ... 0.png?dl=0
Lot's of Freq was jumping all over, I had to correct them before any processing. First of all, Auto-Tune to rebalance key, then pulled down some nasties, De-esser, some compression with Zenner and smile EQ.
FX on Vox Auto-Tune FX and Waves MaxxBass to stand up in the mix.

FX Section
PIC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fcmnruoftiz1q ... X.png?dl=0
Nothing Fancy - Shamancy SLAP DLY, Plate from Lex and Room VRB , which needed some EQ, finally enhance Vox with Antares Duo

MIX BUSS
PIC: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8gyuuixs6rvog ... S.png?dl=0
Brainworx for a bit of widening and remove 80Hz from sides also make a mono all up to 120Hz.
Tape 15 IPS 256 for smile EQ plus some Hi Freq taming.
Sontec EQ for tonality, then Shadow Hill Class A for the final comp. touch (meters barely move), some freq. spread wit Ozone, very last rebalancing EQ. The rest is for my info only, Tonal balance, LUFS Meter, and my Room Correction Soft.

That is it, I tried to be informative as much as possible. Well, good luck to evryone!
Cheers.

Hi All, Here is my mix (48/24):

https://www.dropbox.com/s/i9maleeeaoslj ... r.wav?dl=0

-I found the drum pretty challenging. It seems that the drum tracks lacked high end presence. I tried to enhance this a little bit with EQ and exciter.
-I added a plate reverb on the snare
-The LV was tuned and needed some dynamic compression in the highs to tame the harsh phrases.
-On the Keys I applied substractive EQ on the low mids
-The rest was straightforward balancing

Hope you like it.

Cheers!

I tried to get the drums a bit punchier more exciting with compressors and EQ. I gave the snare and toms some 80's style reverb.
The overheads and cymbals were a bit of a headache because some of the cymbal hits were super loud compared to others. I ended up using a lot of compression.
I crushed the room tracks to get some nice aggressive tones.

I low passed the bass and gave it some compressor to even the low end. Then I copied the bass to another track, high passed it and distorted it with a compressor. I summed these together into a bus and made the final tone shaping in that bus.

I summed guitar, piano, keys and strings to a bus with compression and tape emulation to "glue" things together. On the tracks I used mainly EQ, piano got some compression and exciter.

Solo tracks got some EQ and the reverb track I compressed a bit to bring it up. I added little bit of stereo delay to the dry tracks.

On vocals I used melodyne mainly to tame some unnatural sounding vibrato that sounded to me like singing into a wrongly set up pitch correction. I routed the vocals into multiple effects (Compressor, reverb, many delays, chorus, distortion) and automated some of the effects to bring little bit different flavor to different parts of the song.
