This one really needs to be run through a good maximizer to really hit and it sounds awesome through a Weiss. Difficult to get that effect on the mix alone. I ran this primarily through SSL 4000 channels. There was quite a bit of eq work like getting rid of the nasty ringing on the guitar at 1.17 kHz and to try and deal with the mud. I also uses a flanger on the intro for effect. I think overdriving the SSL channels helped the sound quite a bit. I also used a little bit of doubling on the guitars.

Overall it was fun to mix this style which I don't normally get to do, enjoyed the song especially when it was loud.

Hey guys,

here is my mix - it was a nice experience working with high quality recordings, most sources I'm working on normally are much more lo-fi ;)

MP3: https://mega.nz/#!jsM1naKJ!m0tf90CHeRja ... 5SoXlS3i7c
WAV: https://mega.nz/#!PttDTa4D!XyoXWO9je4VF ... S4q5B29CpI

I went for a full sound with punchy drums and I tried to squeeze some more excitement out of the track while retaining some warmth and life to keep the sound from becoming too artificial. Kick and snare went through some iterations but I'm pretty satisfied with them by now. The guitars, however, were quite a challenge for me because it was just too easy to push their sound into a direction that turned out not to work - still something I have to make some progress when I finally get to work on another metal project!

I'm using quite a lot of plugins that just do specific things in small steps so I'll stay with some "highlights": API-2500 and 550B on the kick to really push it's low-end and click, plus some more attack by using a bit of parallel compression with Rocket. Snare goes through MJUC (mk3) for some punch and hifi drive. I got experimental with the toms and pulled out nearly 6 dB around 300 Hz while adding 6-9 dB at 1.5 and 8 kHz with the SSL E-Channel eq, then some treatment with Transpire and again a bit of parallel procession with Rocket for more attack. Kick and Snare also went into a separate squash track for more parallel treatment with Rocket, Transpire and VEQ to add another layer of life.

For the bass, besides other treatments, I pulled out quite a lot around 6k and used VComp for some analogue punch.

The guitars went through a lot of eq treatment (probably way too much...) and through the CLA-3A. I also catched some peaks here and there with the L1 at the end.

By the way, the piano posed somewhat of challenge (to be honest, I didn't even notice it in some mixes here so far). I wanted it to be audible beneath all the other things going on without creating a mess, while make it sound a little more analogue.

I generally use quite a lot of subtle ducking (about 1 dB at max) between instruments (some also using multi-band sidechain compression), so the guitars make room for snare, kick and also the piano, and the bass makes a bit room for the kick, and so on.

Cheers
Andre

Hy guys.. !!! Please tell me what you think about this mix

Here's my mix :
WAV https://drive.google.com/open?id=1DsjGT ... 4Nsd9dUKVq
MP3 https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Qk2-8 ... SoYMhu2txL

I use only free VST (most of them are reaper plugins), for challenge me and also because i'm poor.. :)

Not a lot of plugins on this mix, the tracks is really good..!

At first, i create a BUSS with all the track before my master track, for having more control on general volume and loudness; on this there's different eq in particular a eq on the side for relieve the bass and keep up a little more the high with a shelve, there's a PTEQ-X (a pulltec free vst) that giving at this mix more color with a little boost on the low and middle-high freq. At end of all there's a BAD BUSS MOJO an harmonics enhancer.

DRUMS are grouped in a general BUSS, with a channel 5 for giving saturation. In this buss, there's group with relative track inside and on every group there's a EQ and on kick and snare a BOD that giving them more character. All the drum buss goes into a parallel with a distorsion and a 1176 style compressor

GUITAR: I reamp the guitar DI with guitar rig (free version obviously.. :) ) because i like them much more and for me are easier to mix and have a good results. On the rhythm guitars group i put some eq (one is a LP and HP eq) and a mb compressor for control the mid-low freq. At the end of the chain there's a limiter for keep always in the face the guitar. Solo guitar, after GR have a eq for reduce some resonance.

BASS: there's an EQ for giving space from and to KICK and a BOD for give them a little bit of aggressiveness.

Like contest rule says, LUFS on this mix are 17,5.

Thanks for every suggestions you'd like to give me.

Hey guys,

first time participating here, really nice to hear all your mixes and read your comments.

I had a great time with this track, nice heavy riffing and great solos.

Normally I mix reggae/dub and hiphop, so I am used to bass heavy tracks and a lot of reverb. Following from that, the two main aims that I had were bringing a little depth to the mix and bringing in a bit more bottom end compared to the reference mix.

I didn't use any other drumsamples than were provided, and used most of the drum tracks (I think I only left out a percussion/room track). I tried to get the kick and snare to be a bit more snappy, and turned down some of the room mics so I could add a bit of my own reverb. I reamped the bass ITB and kept the DI track for the lower frequencies.
Rhythm guitars are panned, eq'd compressed and have reverb, the lead guitar also some delay for more depth. I used all the tracks, but some at minimal volume.

Pretty much everything is eq'd and there is compression on a lot of tracks. I've used 4 reverb busses and one delay bus. There's a decibel or 2 of glue compression on the master bus.

Anyways, here are my files, would love to get some feedback.

Some great entries here - here's my first post (and mix):

My aim with this mix is a cohesive sound that (hopefully) highlight the interplay of the musicians. As such there’s no samples, little compression, more mids (particularly hats and guitars) and less overhyped separation. Less pop, more rock and hopefully a fuller, dynamic, powerful natural sound.

The mix was set up as follows (all plugins native to Logic Pro):

Drums:
  • Levels - boosted the room mic levels and muted all samples.
  • Channel EQ - high pass on overheads and room mic, low boost on kicks and some mid boost on the snares. No other channel EQ used.
  • Compression on kik out and snr btm but otherwise no channel compression on drum tracks
  • Exciter on the drum bus for subtle top end sizzle.
  • Hard parallel compressor on the drum bus to thicken up the drum mix
  • Parallel plate reverb (Space Designer) on snare and drum bus
Bass
  • High pass Channel EQ and compressor on bass bus
  • Inversed ‘Match EQ’ sidechained to the drum bus to separate the bass frequencies from drum mix
Piano
  • Inversed ‘Match EQ’ sidechained to the guitar bus to separate the bass frequencies from guitars
  • Parallel plate reverb
Guitars
  • Levels and pan - muted all DI guitars and spread all Gtr 1 and Gtr 2 mic channels through the left and right stereo fields respectively. Lead guitar mic channels all centred.
  • Low mid boost on rhythm guitars.
  • Inversed ‘Match EQ’ on lead guitar tracks sidechained to the rhythm guitars to separate the lead guitar frequencies from the rhythm guitars
  • Gate on the rhythm guitars set at -2db sidechained to the lead guitars to dynamically reduce rhythm levels for solos.
  • Parallel plate reverb on lead guitars
  • Parallel ‘Spin Box’ leslie cabinet emulator on lead guitars for extra chewy lead tone

Hi everybody ! I just redo my mix
the definitive idea was to have a little more space in a stereo mix with very little compression to keep the natural dynamics of the instruments
now it's good and I hope you enjoy
see you soon !

Since you're new here, Franz... I have to make you aware of the Rules and Guidelines.

I'll let it slide this time, but for the future: your entry is "final" until the next Mix Round sets in.

Hey There.

I like that.

So.

I did that.

MP3

Drums (I love them to feel kind of wet in this genre)
Less OH - compressed the very highs (Waves C1) and used them just for the top end of the song
Samples and Mics
Buscompressed with The Glue and longer Attack
De-Esser & SonEq for managing highs and middle-lows

Bass
220hz boost

Guitars
Scheps 76 & Cla3a 60hz boost
Drive via J37 Tape Emu

Reverbs only LittlePlate on Leadguitars and Valhalla on Drumbus

I loved it.
Had most problems with the pop-part in the end. Because it has weakest groove - but still is killin.

PS: In round 2 i would manage to make toms less loud here and there.

Love
J
