This one has been a lot of fun. For me, the song has several songs inside, and so I did some automation of volumes, effects and panning to guitars, vocals and drums to fit the mood in each part. I am not sure if the texture or the tone of the song is math rock-ish. I did a first mix that was too muddy/grungy tonally, and I had to revise it several times when checking against the reference songs. Here it is:

Vocals: Nice performance and very personal style from the vocalist. I cut some resonances with bx digital, then VQA-154 is used mainly to give some warm saturation and body, Electra for HP filter, remove some lows and boost 1,5kHz. Then Softube FET to catch some peaks, deessing with the LSR plugin, Kush AR-1 to level and pultec style eq for a smoother sound and boosting 5kHz for a better intelligibility. The ADA to widen the stereo. In the interlude from 3:00, I use the Valhalla SPaceModulator to create an harmony effect and the Excalibur to pan the voice with a fast rate. Just for a tripping/dreamy touch.
Send 1: LSR VLB902, Valhalla Delay, bx digital v3mix. Short delay to give some body.
Send 2: LSR VLB902, Black Rooster RO-140 Plate. To give some depth to the voice, insert it between the instruments.
Send 3: LSR VLB902, Soundtoys Echoboy, bx digital v3mix. Longer delay for the final part.
The eq in the sends is to avoid a muddy sound in the mix.
Send 4: Room reverb from Liquidsonics Seventh Heaven
Guitars: I found it difficult to make the Cindy’s guitar compete with David’s one. Finally, applying SansAmp style distortion I was able to find a space for it. Panned them not too hard, sent some delay to the other side of the stereo in both. Automated a lot to avoid hearing the delay when they mute the guitars. Grouped them to apply some more levelling with a Pular MU compressor.
Cindy guitar: Fuse VQA 154 for the colour, Nembrini PSA 1000 SansAmp, TDR SlickEq, Softube FET compressor, Echoboy. Added some bubbly effect with UA Sandman Pro, in the trippy interlude and the outro. It was random so I had to freeze the effect in a parallel track.
David guitar: Fuse Vpre 376 for colour for the colour, DR SlickEq, Softube FET compressor, Echoboy
Send 4: Room reverb from Liquidsonics Seventh Heaven
Send 6: Exponential Audio R4 in guitar wash mode in the intro.
Bass: Fuse Vpre 376 for saturation, Softube FETcompressor to control the signal, Acme Opticom for levelling and low mids, some Bx Subsynth to clean the deep lows and add something between 70 and 90 Hz, and then some Electra Eq. Boz Width knob to fix it in the middle.
Send 4: Room reverb from Liquidsonics Seventh Heaven
Drums: Phase reversal in snare bottom, tom 2 and OH. Used gating and automation. For the snare I used the top mic for the low mids and the bottom one for the crack, had to apply StandardClip to cut some peaks, and grouped them to add some eq. Used the OH for air applying low pass to a group with them. Lowpassed the rooms and squished them to use them to give depth and movement to the drums. Used the hi-hat mic in some moments, I preferred to mute it instead of dealing with the heavy bleed. Applied SSL style compression with the Glue to the drums group.
Send 4: Room reverb from Liquidsonics Seventh Heaven
Send 5: Black Rooster Plate for the snare group only.
Mix bus: The Glue SSL style compressor with the typical settings, Dangerous BAX eq to apply low pass and high pass and Volko audio Q3D Maag style eq to add some 40 Hz and some 20kHz for air. All af them put from the beginning. Then added Oxford Inflator for added volume perception and Voxengo Elephant to add 2 db of volume but without limiting.
Good luck to everyone and thanks to the song provider for this opportunity!
