@el-bo
Clav - Don’t mind the modulation effect, but such an effect benefits from a touch more movement.

In keeping with the live band concept, I tried to avoid any obvious panning effects, but I could see subtle changes over the course of the intro. Is this what you had in mind? Or is this a subjective comment, left up to me to interpret (which is fine, but I'm not quite wrapping my mind around it).

Thanks for you help.

Eric
Wasn't so much panning as maybe messing with rate/modulation. However, listening again, the issue seems to be more that the vibes are too loud. And because they are more naturally static, it just made that whole section feel more so.

I think adjusting the vibe volume should help.

Sorry for the confusion.

Here you go!
More organ with extra edge, more glitter on the brass section and a not so abrupt ending of the piano solo. I hope you enjoy it!

Hi el-bo,

Thank you for choosing me for the second round. I very much appreciated you detailed comments and general thoughts.
I followed your comments and did:
- reducing of the hats in general, and specially during the solo part
- given the organ and brass more top end by use of the TDR VOS SlickEQ, adding some slight satturation to the tone.

I believe I took care of the snare & kick issues - both are much tighter and there is a lot less "thud/bass" on the kick. I dirtied up the organ a bit and brought up the Brass. I also did more automation to build up the ending to a climax. I hope you like it.

Alright, first thanks to el-bo for voting me in round 2 and for all the critiques you did.
Based on all of them I basically tried to build a picture and figure out how you want the song to sound.
Hope I could come a bit closer than in the first attempt.

I made the snare, organ and the brass section brighter by first cleaning up the mix a bit more by sculpting out frequencies that still overlapped to much, mainly in the low mids. That alone made the elements sound clearer and I didn´t have to add a lot of brightness (except for the brass maybe). The bass I tried to push a little into the direction of the original sound by adding some of the midrange of the original bass FX track you provided. I also spent some time on automating certain levels to achieve the desired lifting when the organ and brass sets in.

Hope you like it!

Cheers
Herb

My round 2 submission.

WAV:

el-bo I appreciate the feedback...

-snare - added a little top to the snare, and made sure I could hear the rolls.
-clav - the phasing is a bit more exciting, with some very subtle pans.
-vibes - addressed the dynamics and overall loudness. Should work in concert with the piano now.
-organ - left as is, except I removed the tremolo at the very end to avoid a weird pulsing effect on the whole mix as it sustains that last note.
-brass - addressed individually, and brightened the higher instruments. Subtly spread them, and balanced with the piano, strings, and organ. It's a pretty impressive wall of sound.

Other stuff...
-clavs - a bit more present.
-bass - addressed ear piercing clicking from boosting the high-mids on the split out 'high' bass.
-drums - worked on the dynamics so they exist more in their own space, and don't get lost at the end of the song. Also brought up the ride and cymbals a bit since they really help push the song along.
-on the whole mix, I tried to follow your guidance on lifting and such.

Thanks for the opportunity to mix in round 2. Cool song.

Okay, here's my mix after the revision.

WAV: https://mega.nz/#!1DRihDrL!EmP26leqHgPM ... nM4jBiWlT4
mp3: https://mega.nz/#!te4mnK7Q!EF_579Ojn-VX ... EmhATLiGO8

And here's what I did:

- Addressed the processor noise issue throughout all the track.
- Removed the bass filters
- Rebalanced the Toms, hihat and overheads, and used some saturation and EQ to give some weight to the snare.
- Added some distortion to the organ and tamed the piano a little bit to let it blend better
- Rebalanced the brass section, still stands out but it's not that overwhelming.
- Turned up the room a couple dB and took away a couple from the pianoverb. It sounds a bit more full and natural.

Overall, it sounds less grainy and fizzy to me, mostly thanks to cleaning up the unnecesary noises and favoring the room over the pianoverb. It also has a bit more punch and depth, and the instruments seem to be more balanced and in check.

Once again, thanks for providing the tracks, el-bo. It was a blast to mix, hope you like it.

Cheers!
