First of all I like to say I don't think this music should have ambience of an jazz club. The plot of the video takes place in the pub, but there is no Band playing in the background. So I think the music is at first and the video is to illustrate the music. Would it be a movie and you could see playing a band in the background it's no more music but movie sound. And a lot of scenes don't take place in the club. So in did not try to get a jazz club room ambience.

I like the song very much. But the original mix I found a bit dark and in the fact of the virtual instruments all seemed a bit static to me. So I did a lot of automation to give the whole song a bit more dynamic and motion. For this reason the guitar and the piano got some chorus effects. A lot of volume and pan automation took place. Else, just eq'ing and compressing, nothing special. I used some different reverbs, especially to set the drums in the background.

Here are the results:

Hello and thank you for this really nice song.
I used eq and comps on most channels, then reverbs and delay.
I tried to eq and mix the whole song in context, no solo processing.
And a bit of parallel comp on the drum buss.

Hello All...
Thanks for the chance to do another Challenge!! I thought this would be an easy song to mix......I was wrong.
This was much harder to find a space for the arrangement to live and breath in. This is my vision of this wonderful song.
Happy mixing...

What's up everyone!

First and foremost, thank you to this months song provider Dirk Mallwitz!

I went for a natural room sound. I tried not to add too many effects or processing. Kept it as simple as possible and put most of my mixing emphasis and a good balance and detail to the vocals. Most of my track processing consisted of either the Scheps Omni Channel or the SSL E-Channel on each track in the mix.

I really liked this song and I hope you enjoy my mix!

Good luck to everyone and happy mixing,

cheers!

Here's my submission, mixed in Logic Pro X. I blended a lot of bus processing with the tracks and did more reverb than I'd usually do for the stage-atmosphere. Mix bus was stock logic compressor (2db gain reduction) and SPL vitalizer (basically off aside from bass rounding). I tried to eliminate harshness as much as I could by request.

Hi all,

So, I was a bit confused by the briefing. I started out mixing this like the band was playing in a club, but soon I hit a wall. First, the programmed drums wouldn't fit like it wanted. Secondly, without a visual cue (watching the video/film while listening to the mix), it all sounded a bit weird. Therefore I decided to do something else. It's Jazz, but it's also a different kind taking advantage of technology. With that in mind, I came up with the idea to mix this super modern, lots of details, wide and big. A combination of old and new so to speak. I re-amped the Rhodes with a Fender amp and added a bit of chorus, same goes for the guitar. I used 2 reverbs, a medium club room and a spring reverb on the strings. The solo guitar has compression and a BBD delay. I also found a stock plug-in that emulates a Leslie speaker (a hidden gem I didn't even know I had :-)) I used this to spruce up the organ a bit. The bass has compression a some HP EQ. The vocal is EQed and compressed with a hint of the general club room reverb. In the last chorus I added a bit of delay to make it fit more into the final build up. The master bus has an EQ, compressor and a tape sim.

Furthermore I would like to thank Dirk for the opportunity and to all contestants: best of luck!!!

My best,
FP

This song is determined by the great voice of the female singer and the atmosphere. The original mix presents that really great. Hard to beat, especially when you pay attention to how well film and soundtrack match.

My version tries to preserve the atmosphere of the small club. Subtractive (Izotope neutron) and additive EQ (mostly Neve 73) on all tracks and work on dynamics (CLA 76, Lindell Neve, Disto-S) as well.

Likewise worked on all tracks with analog textures / saturation. Depending on the material, Soundtoys Tape, Little Radiator, SPl Twin Tube or the 73 Preamp were used.

On the vocals was in addition a dynamic EQ (TDR Nova), because here you can hear a few resonances from the microphone itself, but also some slightly changing resonances in the low mid range (I guess small vocal booth and head movement).

For the reverb i used a convolution reverb with the Ocean Jazz Club, plus a small Bricasti Plate. Sidestick and Toms got some non-linear reverberation from AMS.

The track of the piano (which somehow sounded like a mixture of Rhodes and Wurlitzer) I split up to be able to use different FX chains for verses and chorus. Likewise, I have also dealt with the OH track.

On the Mixbus is the Townhouse Compressor for the Glue (2db Movement), a little bit tape texture, a small base EQ and a subtle limiter that responds only to a few very high pulse peaks. The whole thing is mixed to -16 LUFS and still provides plenty of beef for mastering.

The piano got in addition a chorus effect and some stereo tremolo to give a little bit of Leslie vibes.

The guitar was sent through a jazz chorus amp simulation.
